A 12-month wedding planning timeline, month by month

By the MarryPrep team

A year is enough time to plan a wedding without rushing, provided the big decisions come first. The order below works for most couples; if you have less time, keep the sequence and shorten the gaps.

12 to 10 months before: the foundations

  • Agree the budget, who is contributing and what matters most to each of you.
  • Draft a first guest list. The number decides the venue, the menu and much of the cost.
  • Choose a season and a shortlist of dates, then visit venues.
  • Book the venue and, if you are marrying in a place of worship or a registry office, the ceremony date.

9 to 7 months: the big bookings

  • Book the photographer, the caterer if the venue does not provide one, and the music.
  • Decide who is in the wedding party and ask them.
  • Start looking at attire. Made-to-measure outfits need months, not weeks.
  • Open a shared planning space so both of you, and anyone helping, see the same list.

6 to 4 months: the details

  • Book the florist, the officiant if you are using one, and transport.
  • Create your wedding website and send save-the-dates, especially if guests must travel.
  • Reserve rooms for guests, or recommend places to stay at different prices.
  • Order the invitations and agree the wording.

3 to 1 months: paperwork and fine-tuning

  1. Send the invitations about eight to ten weeks before, with a clear reply date.
  2. Confirm the legal paperwork with the registry office and note every deadline.
  3. Plan the day itself: schedule, readings, speeches and the order of events.
  4. Chase replies, then start the seating plan and give final numbers to the caterer.

The last month

Confirm every vendor in writing, finalise the schedule, prepare payments and envelopes, and share the day-of timeline with the people who will be helping. Leave the last week for rest rather than tasks.

Nothing here is mandatory. It is simply an order that keeps the expensive, hard-to-change decisions ahead of the ones you can adjust at the last moment.
